In this part of the island which is north-facing, the beaches are never too hot and never too crowded; the beaches of Marciana Marina are small with a mostly rocky sea-bed and some small patches of sand, but the sea itself is crystal clear and rich in fish.

Over and above the three beaches of Marciana Marina, a pleasant walk takes you along to the pretty little coves of La Cala and La Caletta to the west of the town. Along the coast which takes you from Marciana Marina to Procchio, there are many little coves with rocks and sand, easily reached from the main road by short footpaths.

For those who love long sandy beaches, there are those of Procchio and Marina di Campo, only a few kilometres away.

La Cala
This is a very charming little cove, well worth the walk along the track. There is space for a few boats and this tends to give the impression of a tiny fishing community. The pebbled beach is lined with tamerisk trees which go right down to the water's edge.

How to get there: very easily by sea, simply following along the coast. By land, you must follow the signpost and set off on the tarmac road for Ripa Barata - Caletta - Cala which starts off near the tower in Marciana Marina. Continue until you reach a National Park signpost where La Cala is indicated. From there, a footpath takes you along the 1500 metres to the cove.

Sea-bed: pebbles
Length: about 50 metres
Average width: 6 metres
Facing north
Sheltered from East and South-west
Services: bar and restaurant
Parking: very limited along the road before the start of the footpath

Ripa Barata and La Caletta
A little cove in the most beautiful natural surroundings suitable for those looking for the sea with a capital "S".

How to get there: very easily by sea, simply following along the coastline. By land, you must follow the signs for Ripa Barata - Caletta - Cala, going along the tarmac road which starts off near the tower in Marciana Marina. When you come to the National Park signpost for Ripa Barata, you follow down the footpath for about 600 metres through thick Mediterranean "macchia" - the typical vegetation of the island - until you reach the little beach.
La Caletta is a little bay, smaller and a little further along on the left.

Sea-bed: gravel and rock
Length: about 50 metres
Average width: 4 metres
Facing north
Sheltered from East and South-west
Parking: limited along the side of the road

Fenicia and Fenicetta
© Foto BertiLa Fenicia is the village beach of Marciana Marina, situated just behind the Medicean tower.
The beach is made up of smooth stones and pebbles. Part of the beach is given over to organized beach services with wooden terraces higher up from the level of the sea.

From the Fenicia beach, following along a pathway for 30 to 40 metres, you reach the Fenicetta, another secluded little beach.

How to get there: very simply as it is in the village.

Sea-bed: pebbly
Length: 100 metres
Average width: 10 metres
Facing north
Sheltered from East and South-west

This is a spectacular little bay, visible from the road and particularly charming for its unusual contrast in colour between the black and white of the two parts of its little beach, certainly making it unique.

How to get there: just outside Marciana Marina, 700 metres along the road to Procchio, on the left hand side there is a very steep pathway which takes you down about 150 metres to the little pebbly beach.

Sea-bed: stony and rocky
Length: 20 metres
Average width: about 5 metres
Facing North-east
Sheltered from South-east and North-west
Parking: a small car park on the bend as you leave the town

Bagno
The distinguishing features of this beach are the fascinating old buildings from over a century ago including those where tuna fish used to be brought ashore to be cleaned and divided.

How to get there: from Marciana Marina, follow the directions for Procchio for 2.5 kilometres. On the corner there is a wooden fence which marks the footpath which has some steps too that take you down the 100 metres or so to the beach.

Sea-bed: pebbly
Length: about 40 metres
Average width: 8 metres

Sheltered from South and South-west

Sprizze
A pretty little beach bordered by rich Mediterranean shrubs and bushes. The sea is particularly clear and the forms of the rocks are a wonderland for divers. The oak trees which grow right down to the sea give plenty of shade.

How to get there: from Marciana Marina, follow the directions for Procchio for 3.5 kilometres. The locality of Sprizze is written on the wall by the side of the road. Not far away, there is a wooden fence which marks the beginning of the steep footpath which takes you through a wood for about 150 metres down to the beach.

Redinoce
This is a rocky beach but there is also a built-up terrace which is filled with fine sand in summer to create a small beach complex. The quality of the crystal clear water and the proximity of the tiny island called "La Paolina" make it very pleasant.

How to get there: from Marciana Marina, follow the signs for Procchio for 4.2 kilometres. On the left, in front of the hotel "Le Briciole", there is a little road which is closed to traffic that takes you down the 350 metres to the beach.

Sea-bed: pebbles and 20 metres of sand which has been brought there to make up a small beach complex.
Length: 100 metres
Width: 4 metres
Facing North-east
Services: small beach facilities
Parking: a little parking area very near the entrance of the approach road to the beach.

Paolina
This attractive little beach takes its name from the tiny green island in front of it, "La Paolina" named after Napoleon Bonaparte's sister, reminding us of his stay on Elba from 1814 and 1815.
The beach is partially sheltered by a little headland on the right and at your shoulders there is a steep slope covered with oak trees offering a little shade in the heat of summer.

How to get there: On the main road from Marciana Marina to Procchio at about 5 kilometres from Marciana Marina there is a short but in parts rather steep pathway with steps which takes you down the 150 metres to the beach.

Sea-bed: pebbles and sand
Length: about 50 metres
Width: about 10 metres
Facing: North-east
Sheltered from East and North
Services: bar, renting of beach umbrellas and various types of water craft
